Video: Measuring Piston to Cylinder Bore Clearance

MAHLE Motorsports has been active for some time now providing important technical information with their Technical Tuesday’s Facebook video posts. One of the more popular of them is measuring piston to bore clearance.

The first thing customers need to do is access MAHLE Motorsports’ 2017 Application Guide, which can be found online here, with a link to download the pdf. Once the specific application is located, the part #’s are on the far right side of the page, and just to the left of the part # is the measuring point, indicating where to measure on the piston. Using the proper measuring point is vital to ensure accuracy as each MAHLE Motorsport piston has a unique profile to it, designed so that the piston is at the optimal size under operating temperatures. If you measure above or below the measuring point, you will get an inaccurate reading that does not represent the maximum diameter of the piston

MAHLE is the world’s largest piston manufacturer, and is the leading piston liaison between upper level professional racing, OE and the specialty equipment automotive aftermarket. All parts are machined to exacting tolerances on MAHLE manufactured, application specific equipment with unmatched quality and consistency. The U.S. Motorsports division operates in Fletcher, NC.
